PS5 HDMI Port Repair: Everything You Need to Know
PS5 not displaying on TV? Here's why the HDMI port is a common PS5 fault and what to do about it.
A faulty HDMI port is one of the most common PS5 hardware faults. If your PS5 powers on but shows nothing on the TV, or if the picture is intermittent or distorted, the HDMI port is the first thing to check.
Why PS5 HDMI Ports Fail
The PS5 uses HDMI 2.1 — a physically identical connector to HDMI 2.0, but with higher bandwidth for 4K 120Hz and 8K output. The port on the PS5 is a standard through-hole mounted connector, and it’s prone to a few failure modes:
Physical damage: HDMI cables at an angle, tripping over cables, or the console being knocked while connected can bend or break the HDMI pins. Even minor physical damage can cause intermittent or no picture.
Pin damage from insertion: Repeated HDMI cable connections over time can gradually damage the internal pins. Pushing a cable in slightly misaligned is a common cause of bent pins.
Solder joint failure: The port is soldered to the PS5 motherboard. High-force events (drops, cable trips) can cause the solder joints to crack, resulting in an intermittent connection.
How to Tell If It’s the HDMI Port
Try a different HDMI cable first — this rules out a faulty cable. If the problem persists with a known-good cable, and particularly if you can see bent or damaged pins in the PS5’s HDMI port, the port needs replacing.
Other signs of a failing HDMI port:
- Picture cuts out when the cable is touched or moved
- Green, flickering or distorted image
- “No signal” when the PS5 is clearly on (fan running, light bar lit)
- HDMI cable feels loose in the port
Can It Be Fixed?
Yes — HDMI port replacement is one of the most common console repairs we do at MTM IT. It involves removing the damaged port and soldering a new one to the PS5 motherboard. It’s a precision job requiring the right tools, but it’s a reliable repair when done properly.
Price: PS5 HDMI port replacement starts from £79 at MTM IT.
Turnaround: Typically 24–48 hours.
Warranty: 12 months on the repair.
What to Avoid
A word of caution: PS5 HDMI port repair requires microsoldering skills and appropriate equipment. Attempts to repair it with standard soldering equipment or without experience are likely to cause motherboard damage. If in doubt, bring it to a specialist rather than attempting a DIY fix.
