Which kind of locked?

Locked out of your own phone
This is the one we get called about most. The phone works perfectly — you just can't get into it, because the PIN, passcode or pattern has gone out of your head, or a child has changed it, or it's a phone you've inherited and nobody knows the code.
The honest answer is the one nobody wants: there is no way in. On any current iPhone or Android phone the screen lock is tied to encryption on the device itself. It isn't a password we can look up or reset from the outside — that's the entire point of it, and it's the reason a stolen phone is worth so little. The only route to a working phone is a full factory reset, which wipes everything on it: photos, messages, apps, notes, the lot.
Whether that's a disaster or an inconvenience comes down to one thing: whether the phone was backing up. If it was signing into iCloud or a Google account, most of what matters comes back when you sign in on the freshly reset phone. If it never was, nothing comes back. It's worth checking how your backups are set up on any phone you still have access to — today, not after something goes wrong.

Can you unlock a phone without a factory reset?
Not if it's the screen lock you're stuck behind — no, and it's worth being suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. The passcode is tied to the encryption on the device itself, so there is nothing to bypass and nothing to look up. The videos promising a way in through the emergency call screen are describing bugs that were patched years ago.
The one genuine exception is worth checking before you give up: if the phone is still signed in somewhere else, or was recently backed up, your data may already be safe even though the handset isn't. We'll check that with you before resetting anything.
What it costs, and how long it takes
Short version: find out which kind of locked you've got before you pay anyone, because two of the three cost nothing to resolve.
- Network locked. Ask your own network first — if the handset came from a UK network you're still with, they'll normally unlock it free of charge. If that route isn't open to you, call us with the make, model and network and we'll tell you whether that handset can be unlocked and what it costs before you commit to anything.
- Locked out behind the passcode. The reset itself is quick. The part that actually takes the time is working out whether your data is recoverable first, and whether you have the account details you'll need afterwards — which is why we go through that with you before starting rather than after.
- Account locked. Nothing to quote, because it cannot legitimately be done by us or anyone else. We'll confirm what you're looking at for free so you don't pay someone who claims otherwise.

The account lock after a reset
There's a second gate behind the first one, and it catches people out. Once an iPhone is reset it asks for the Apple Account it was last signed into; an Android phone asks for its Google account. Know those details and the phone comes back to life in a couple of minutes. Don't know them, and the phone stays a brick — no repair shop can legitimately get past it, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or doing something you don't want to be part of.

Network unlocking
The original meaning of "unlocking": a handset sold by one network that refuses a SIM from another. If your phone is network locked, we can unlock it — bring it in or give us a ring with the make and model.
What's changed is how rarely it's needed. Buy a handset new today and it almost always arrives unlocked, so most people asking about this turn out not to need it. The phones we do see are usually older ones that have been sitting in a drawer since locking was standard.
Which is why it's worth doing the one-minute test before you pay anyone, us included: put a SIM from a different network in the phone. If it makes a call, it isn't locked and there's nothing to do. If it asks for an unlock code, it is — call us and we'll tell you whether that particular model can be unlocked and what it'll cost before you commit to anything. If the phone came from a UK network you're still with, it's worth asking them first too, as they'll normally do it free.

I've forgotten my phone PIN or passcode — can you get me back in?
We can get the phone working again, but not with your data still on it. There is no back door: on any modern iPhone or Android phone the only way past a forgotten screen lock is a full factory reset, which erases everything on the device. If your photos and messages are backed up to iCloud or a Google account, they come back when you sign in afterwards. If they were never backed up, they are gone. Bring the phone in and we will tell you honestly what your options are before doing anything.
Will a factory reset definitely make the phone usable again?
Only if you know the account the phone is signed into. After a reset, an iPhone asks for the Apple Account it was last signed into, and an Android phone asks for its Google account — that protection exists so a stolen phone is worthless, and it works.
