What to Do Right Now

If your device has just got wet, follow these steps immediately to give it the best chance of recovery.

1

Power it off immediately

Do not try to turn it back on. Press and hold the power button to shut it down if it's still on.

2

Remove case, SIM and accessories

Take off the case, remove the SIM card, and disconnect any cables or accessories.

3

Do not charge it

Applying power to a wet device can short-circuit components. Do not plug it in.

4

Do not use rice

Rice is a myth — it doesn't draw moisture from inside the device and can introduce dust and debris.

5

Bring it to us as soon as possible

The faster we can disassemble and clean the device, the better the chance of a successful recovery.

Water Damage Repair — FAQs

Can a water-damaged phone be saved?

Often yes — especially if you act quickly and the device is brought to us before it has been powered on again. Water itself doesn't destroy electronics; it's the short-circuiting caused by electricity passing through water that causes damage. If we can clean and dry the components before they corrode, there's a good chance of full recovery.

My phone says it's water-resistant. Will that help?

Water resistance (IP67, IP68) reduces the risk but doesn't eliminate it. The seals degrade over time, and drops or pressure can compromise them. Any phone that has been fully submerged or exposed to liquid should still be assessed, especially if it shows any symptoms like a flickering screen, muffled speaker or erratic behaviour.

How long does water damage repair take?

Water damage repair typically takes 24–48 hours at our Tiverton workshop. We disassemble the device, ultrasonically clean the components, dry them under controlled conditions, and reassemble before testing. The full assessment takes time to do properly.

How much does water damage repair cost?

Water damage assessment and cleaning starts from £49 for phones and tablets, from £89 for MacBooks. If components need replacing as part of the repair, these are priced separately and confirmed with you before work begins. If we can't recover your device, you pay nothing for the repair attempt.

My phone dried out and seems fine — do I still need to bring it in?

We'd recommend it, yes. Corrosion from water damage often appears days or weeks after the initial incident, causing intermittent faults, a failing battery, or complete failure. An inspection and clean now is much cheaper than a repair — or a new phone — later.

What should I do right now if my phone got wet?

Turn it off and do not try to charge it — powering a wet device on is what causes most of the damage. Don't put it in rice (it does nothing and leaves dust and starch behind). Dry the outside, leave it switched off, and get it to us as soon as possible. The faster we can clean the internals before corrosion sets in, the better the chance of full recovery.

My phone went in the sea or a salty/sugary drink — is that worse?

Yes — salt water, sea water and sugary or alcoholic drinks are far more corrosive and conductive than clean water, so they cause damage faster. Time matters even more in these cases. Switch the device off and bring it straight to our Tiverton workshop, or call us about an urgent call-out across Mid Devon.

Can you collect a water-damaged device from Cullompton or Crediton?

We cover Cullompton, Crediton, Wellington and the surrounding Mid Devon villages by call-out. For water damage, speed is critical and the work itself (ultrasonic cleaning and controlled drying) is done at the workshop — so the quickest route is usually to bring it in or arrange collection. Call us on 01884 693694 and we'll advise the fastest option.

Do you repair water-damaged MacBooks and laptops?

Yes. Liquid-damaged MacBooks and laptops are assessed and cleaned from £89. Spills on a laptop keyboard can quickly reach the logic board, so switch it off, unplug it, don't turn it back on, and bring it in. We disassemble, clean and dry the board and assess any components that need replacing before quoting.
